As a loyal customer of 3 years, I have been most disappointed with the recent service I have received at your Bury store. I purchased a £47 pair of Start-Rite Princess Serena shoes in April 2015 just before my daughter went back to school for the summer term. Within 3 days of her wearing the shoes, the embellishments had fallen off leaving the shoes looking old and tatty. I went back to your store and was told that they could not replace at that time because they didn't have the size I required in stock. I was told that my daughter could wear the shoes for now whilst they ordered a replacement pair and that then we would do a straight swap which I was happy to accept. After two weeks of no contact I rang the store and was told that the shoes had not been ordered due to staff error and that they would be ordered immediately. Again I was happy with the response and waited patiently for another two weeks during which time I received no contact from the store. When I rang back for a second time I was told that yet again the shoes had not been ordered and now Start-Rite would not be able to complete the order for another 4 weeks. After 4 weeks I contacted the store again and was told that the shoes had not been ordered and I would have to wait another 2 weeks. At this point I had been waiting 8 weeks for a replacement pair of shoes and told the assistant on the phone that as there was only 2 weeks of term left that there was no point in ordering them as she would receive them at the start of the summer holidays and would probably require another size for September. The assistant was apologetic and passed me on to a senior staff member who said that as a goodwill gesture I could have 50% off her next pair of shoes which I graciously accepted. Before ending the call, I reiterated the offer and asked how I would be able to redeem it instore and she assured me that she would make a note on the file for when I came in. I visited the store for a new pair of shoes at the end of August and spoke to a manager named Karen before the fitting to ensure that the 50% offer still stood. Her look of disbelief and subsequent disdainful treatment of me in front of other customers left me shocked and embarassed as at first she refused to even go and check in the office to confirm that I was telling the truth. When eventually she did go and check and grudgingly admitted that I was telling the truth, she did not even apologise for either her behaviour or their mistake. My daughter had her shoes fitted and chose the pair she wanted and we made our way to the till where I was informed that actually even though they would honour the 50% offer that they could not do that without the old pair of shoes which they had neglected to tell me on the phone or before I had the shoes fitted. I subsequently paid for the shoes (to ensure that I could have a quick handover when I came to swap them as I would be visiting alone with baby twins and a 7 year old) and left the store. 7 days, a 40 mile round trip and another set of parking charges later I returned the old pair of shoes and had to explain the entire situation again to a different assistant who greeted me with the same look of disbelief. After 10 minutes of discussion during which time I had to also attempt to calm my distressed 1 year old twins I finally managed to persuade the assistant to even go and look for the shoes I had already paid for! Needless to say without an adequate apology I will not be returning to your store for any of the shoes my 3 children will require in the future or recommending your service to any of my parent friends or primary teaching colleagues. I honestly expected better service from such a long standing independent shoe shop.
